Mid-Week Online Idea Exchange #5

Date(s): April 29, 2020

Time: 9:00 AM  EST - 10:00 AM  EST

The HR Alliance Board of Directors is launching Wednesday weekly online IDEA EXCHANGES that are open (available) to all HR leaders in the District, Maryland and Virginia. The objective is to provide frequent opportunities for HR leaders to come together and share ideas, strategies and practices to help our profession, our employers and our peers successfully maneuver during these uncertain times.

IDEA EXCHANGES are not seminars, sales pitches or formal programs. They are open platforms for professional dialogue during which breakout sessions will allow exploration of specific topics, and group sharing for all participants. The IDEA EXCHANGE, facilitated by an HR Alliance Board member, will allow participants to specifically discuss a particular topic.

A significant underlying issue that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to all of us is uncertainty.  Uncertainty in life circumstances, the future, and our health and safety can bring anxiety which affects us all.  And this is not just our personal health and safety, but also the health of the organizations we work for.  This anxiety is not unlike that which is felt by organizational changes in which employees are often unwilling participants and spectators to what is happening around them.  Our brains are wired for anxiety caused by the unknown, and talking about how we’re dealing with that ourselves can be therapeutic and can fill in the blanks of uncertainty.  Companies and their leaders can overcome these anxieties through a thoughtful and employee-focused change management philosophy.

Breakout 1

  • Be honest...where are you and your organization on the “change curve”?  For those who have made it through the ‘valley of despair’, how did you do it?  For those who are still navigating their way, what are you doing to help your organization make it through?
  • What outside-the-box communication strategies, platforms or techniques are you using to keep all stakeholders (employees, clients, customers, vendors, the public, etc.) engaged and informed throughout this constantly changing environment?
Breakout 2
  • While trying to formulate the messages that offer stability and reassurance, HR professionals and their leadership teams are also personally impacted by the uncertainties of this situation.  Change agents are not immune to the changes around them.  How are you and your teams coping, and what kinds of things are you doing for yourself or providing for your people to help them adjust to the changes around them?
  • When facing employee furloughs, layoffs, illnesses and deaths, as well as the impacts on our employees’ family members, in what ways is your organization demonstrating care and empathy while also supporting the effective business operations?

Here is the zoom link to participate on Wednesday, April 29 at 9:00 a.m. Please feel free to share this link in your network. There is no cost to participate; however, we do need participants to register.   We are all in this together.
